Basics: Combining media

Combining pastel with paint

This simple technique is shown below in four stages. It can of course be applied to any subject to equally great effect. Try this by combining oil pastel on top of either oil paint or acrylic paint.

NB: you can use water soluble oil paint and oil pastels if you prefer.

First
 - draw in the outlines but not details, in light pencil then paint in a colour wash the first petal. This layer of colour is also referred to as the 'ground colour'.
Second - apply first layers of pastel

Third - build up layers of pastels until desired effect achieved;

Fourth - repeat steps 1-3 for each remaining petal and rest of painting to finish.
